Backstory

Historically, women have been represented at lower rates than men in both science and engineering college programs and careers. This representation stems from early society patterns of representing these careers as "masculine" and the lack of female role models in the engineering field.

Women in Engineering (WIE) is a college-wide program dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for students in The Grainger College of Engineering.

As a student, I benefited from this community in tremendous ways and I wanted to find a way to give back. I have always looked for ways to inspire students to keep dreaming and creating, so I decided to redesign the first-year course for Women in Engineering.

The Process

The entire course was designed with my own experience as a woman in engineering as well as valuable input from several of my peers. Anything I wished I knew coming into the challenging and joyful stage of life that is college, I poured into the course.

The final result is a heartfelt course that brought a smile to my face every time I was able to teach it to the next generation of engineers. A compilation of life tips and tricks, videos, articles, and personal; development exercises bring the course to life.

Even though I graduated in 2021 and no longer teach this course, its timelessness will keep inspiring women engineers to follow their dreams pursuing great and fulfilling lives for many more years.
