Backstory

Growing up, I visited Colombia frequently. The memories I cherish the most from those trips are always related to visiting street markets in Bogota and being surrounded by all these colorful clothes, leather products, and beautiful jewelry.

Some of my favorite things I own have been collected throughout the years from these markets or have been heirlooms passed down from my Mañi (grandma). The one thing they all have in common is that they are designed and crafted by Colombian hands using Colombian materials and define the rich culture of this country.

We hope to cultivate a sense of global connectedness with every product included in the box and share the amazing stories of its creators. Most importantly, we hope you can savor a little piece of this beautiful country that is Colombia.

User Persona

The Opportunity

The artisan sector in Colombia employs approximately 350,000 skilled craftsmen and women, contributing significantly to the country's cultural and economic landscape.

In 2021, Colombian handcrafted exports reached an impressive value of nearly $6.5 million USD*. The most prominent trades within this sector include weaving, which accounts for 58% of the market, followed by wood crafts at 13.5%, and ceramics at 7.4%.

Colombia's rich natural resources provide artisans with a diverse array of raw materials, infusing their locally-made products with unique textures and character that distinguish them on the global stage.

There is a significant opportunity to harness this vibrant artisan community and introduce their exceptional products to a wider audience.

The Solution

Each box tells a story . . .

Conclusion

Although the TINTO y SOL project did not evolve into a full-fledged company as I transitioned into a full-time design consultant, it holds a beautiful place in my heart.

The vision of supporting Colombian artisans and sharing their exquisite craftsmanship with the world remains a cherished goal. I know that one day, when the time is right, I will return to this passion project and bring it to life, creating meaningful connections and sustainable opportunities for these talented creators.

Special thanks to Professor Brian Lilly from the University of Illinois for believing in this idea and providing invaluable support.
